Then the Young Travel tariffs could close the gaps in your health insurance benefits.

Our Young Travel health insurance for international students in Germany is particularly suitable for students and exchange pupils who are enrolled at a private university. The prerequisite is that your private university does not require statutory health insurance (GKV for ‘Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung’) as a condition of enrollment, as it is at public universities. Therefore, please check the enrolment conditions beforehand.

Jack is a 20 year old student from Great Britain and spends two semesters at a private university in Germany. His health insurance Advigon Young Travel steps in and covers the costs of the treatment.

FAQs – Health insurance for students, interns and au pairs in Germany

Who can take out the Young Travel health insurance?

The travel health insurance is an offer for au pairs, pupils, language students, university students, scholarship holders, PhD students and participants in “Work & Travel” programmes who are staying in Germany for a longer period. The insurance can be taken out by persons younger than 35 years of age.

Do au pairs need health insurance in Germany?

In the German healthcare system the au pair’s host family is responsible to take out health, accident and liability insurance for their au pair. According to the Federal Employment Agency, German host families must provide coverage for their au pair in the event of illness, pregnancy and childbirth, as well as an accident.

Do I need health insurance in Germany as an intern?

When you are planning to do an internship in Germany you have to take out German health insurance. As a student, if your internship is compulsory for your study, you must pay your own health insurance contributions. If it is a voluntary internship, you share the contributions with your employer if you work more than 20 hours a week.

Do students need health insurance in Germany?

Yes, in Germany you have to arrange your own health insurance as a student before you register at a university. This can be private or statutory. Students from non-EU countries should check if there is a social security agreement between Germany and their home country. If so, the insurance in your home country should also be valid in Germany. Therefore, ask your provider at home before you go to Germany. If this is not the case, you will have to take out a German health insurance.
Students from EU or EEA countries (Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland) are usually covered by health insurance in their home country. Before you go to Germany, ho ever, you must have this recognized by a German health insurance company. In this case, you also need an EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card), which you receive from the statutory health insurance in Germany.

What should be borne in mind when visiting the home country?

If the insurance cover applied for exceeds 12 months, the insurance cover in the home country is limited to six weeks a year. Beyond that, travel in the home country* is not insured.

*Home country as defined in this condition means your permanent residence before your temporary stay in Germany.

What should be borne in mind when visiting the USA and Canada?

For trips to the USA or Canada, this insurance cover is limited to 14 days per trip.

Can the insurance be extended or terminated early?

If you end your stay in Germany early, you can terminate the insurance. In this case, it is important that you keep your air tickets and other evidence of the premature end to the trip.

If you wish to extend your stay in Germany, you can at any time continue our insurance with an extension contract. Please note that the total period of stay in Germany is limited to five years.
